Hello there. I have just returned from a holiday in costa rica and as expected i loved it. I have now begun to learn spanish in earnest and my house is up for sale! I want to get back there asap, prob to rent at first and then to buy. However, i have no idea how to go about any of this. I have a 20 month old daughter (i am a widow) and so need to consider how i could achieve any earnings as a single parent out there?

I am a registered nurse, although was hoping to be able to set up an internet based business (affiliates or something) but would then require high speed internet access which does not seem to be in all places in CR. I would like to live in or near Quepos!

Does anybody have any advice on renting/on childcare/on internet access/on relocation in general. All help would be very greatly received!

salud! Jo x

ps i am assuming i can just go and live there without residency if i go out of the country every 3 months! Is this correct or are the regulations more strict than this!? freakedout (In the future i hope to meet a hunk of a Latin American man to sweep me off my feet.......................thus solving residency problems!!! I can live in hope i guess LOL)

Hi Jo,

High speed Internet is getting more available, currently the ICE has plans for expansion of the service to Quepos in the last half of this year.  Look here
Costa Rica Broadband Internet Access for links and info.

Everyone should be aware that there is a new Immigration law coming into effect that makes being a perpetual tourist more difficult, particularly finding work because it carries sanctions for those who house or employ illegal immigrants, which would in theory include people here legally on a tourist visa which does not allow you to work.  We don't know how Immigration will enforce the law though.

The good part is that it may be easier to obtain a work permit, and if you have your own Internet based business you won't have to worry about being an employee.

Childcare is relatively inexpensive, you can hire a live-in maid to help you with cleaning, cooking and baby sitting for about $250 per month.  It is a great option if you are working at home, since you can monitor your help.

Renting in an area is a good option if you haven't spent much time here. The rental contracts are for a minimum of 3 years, but the renter is able to get out of the contract.  If you give 3 months notice, you may terminate the contract and should get your security deposit back.   You may also get the owner to put 1 month in the contract or to take a 50% deposit.
