Hola, I'm new to the site and soon to be new to CR. In my search for a vehicle I have seen a number of relatively inexpensive Land Rovers that appear to be in good condition. I find the CR history on these vehicles and their use on the farms very interesting. I use to drive my room mates 1957 series 1 so I am aware of their capabilities and limitations such as highway driving but I think most of my commuting will be in the Playa Negra area where I plan to relocate to. Does anyone have any advise on purchasing one of these vehicles or common problems to be aware of, liscensing, taxes etc? I am a builder, Project Manager with a practical background and would be interested in volunteering to gain some local knowledge, learn the language and get to know my new neighbors. Any tips?

Gracias,
Dan

Yes the classic Land Rovers are good choice, particularly in rural areas of Costa Rica.  You might also consider the old Toyota Land Cruisers, that are very similar.  You might find parts are less expensive and more readily available than for the Land Rover.

We have two articles on importing a car  and buying a car in Costa Rica to recommend:

Thanks for the tips/recommendations Russ. I have not been able to locate a large listing of used vehicles. I suspect my problem is that I am searching in English. I can fumble my way thru understanding an add in Spanish when I find one, but my current language skills aren't much of a help for the initial search aspect. I was origionally focused on the Toyota Land Cruiser when I found the Rover so we're on the same page there. Can you recommend any links or pages where one might find a few comparison vehicles and values?

I saw some result on Craig's List that now has a Costa Rica section.  Also have a look at Fijatevos:
Used Vehicles Costa Rica , which has close to 100 vehicles including some nice Land Cruisers.

Another cool place is Diario Extra

Oops, hit the return button too soon.  Another place is Economicos.com, they have the last 7 days of classified ads from La Nacion.
