GREAT  ROAST CHICKEN  IN ESCAZU
In a past Ezn  I wrote that A higher up executive in a well known
chain of chicken restaurants, commented that he truly enjoyed this
restaurant and that it was the best roast chicken that he has ever
eaten. The other day, my mother and sister in law who are both good
clients of this restaurant, brought home a roasted chicken and let
me tell you it was really delicious.  Malé is located in downtown
Escazu, from the church 75 meters to the North, going against
traffic.  Their hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. -9 p.m.
Sundays closes at 8 p.m. Malé telephone 2280623. Well today I still
can say is a great tasty chicken, great  home made tortillas and
the frijoles  molidos or black beens  are  super  delicious and  now
with home delivery

SALE E PEPE
I hadn't gone back for years, but the other night we were invited to
celebrate my mother-in-law's (Sadie Valverde Vega) birthday.  It was
a family gathering, so we went with our kids, and surprisingly, it
is still the same regarding quality which is very good.   We ordered
Pizza, Ham and Cheese for the kids and for us we ordered a pizza
called 4 seasons which was delicious.   A very good service at
moderate price.  We sat upstairs which I found it to be a very
pleasant place.   Soon I will go to try the pastas which everybody
recommends me.   Sale e Pepe is located behind Pops in Escazu.

TRE FRATELLI  And I went with Silvia to eat at Tre Fratelli, which
you all know, I wrote about this establishment more than 600 days
ago.
We arrived on a fashionable Friday,  915 p.m.,  parking lot full,
full of people, I think this Paco commercial Center between Tre
Fratelli and Panino give a warm and pleasant atmosphere, the
atmosphere at Tre Fratelli is pleasant, we took a table on the
terrace, I like that because one can see all the movement around
one. We began; something I prefer when going out to eat is to move
slowly, in that way you can enjoy the night and the company,
naturally the waiters don't always agree with me, but I like to keep
on asking little by little. Tre Fratelli allows for this type of
relaxation due to the high quantity and quality offered in its menu,
its menu is varied, there is a measured food section for those who
are on a diet created by the famous dietician Larisa Paez, which I
think I'll follow in future to get myself in shape, since she has
placed on a diet or rather, taught half the world in Escazu how to
eat, and another important thing is 2x1 in drinks when it rains,
that is a Happy Hour with rain.
This is how our visit went. To begin with, some first-rate breaded
calamares (which are my favorite as I ate them a lot in the United
States) (CALAMARI DORATTI:  Golden rings of calamar, accompanied by
the creamy house), some mushrooms which were delicious, with a sweet
pepper sauce accompanied by an exquisite eggplant (FUNGHI
GRIGLIATA:  Fresh grilled mushrooms served with a sauce having a
sweet pepper base, accompanied by eggplant rings),the first-class
salmon dish and garnishes ( CARPACCIO DE SALMÓN:  Thin rounds of
salmon marinated in extra virgin olive oil, lemon, capers, dill and
onion).Of course all this came to the table little by little, giving
time to talk., digest and enjoy everything accompanied by an Italian
wine which, as regards price and quality, the quality is higher than
the price, that is, it is good, attractive and not very expensive
(MONTEPULCIANO D' ABRUZZO  ( CITRA brand)).   Just then they brought
us an aperitif or drink of something which is very fashionable in
Italy, ...FRAGOLINO BLANCO     very light but full of alcohol, that
is, you can get drunk without realizing it.Now the main dishes, of
course after the waiter told me that the kitchen closes at 11 p.m.
and it was 11.15 p.m., well luckily we asked for 2 dishes, I asked
for a gnocchi in a 4-cheese sauce  (GNOCCHI FOUR CHEESES: Pasta
based on potato bathed in sauce prepared with 4 different cheeses).
Gentlemen this dish ia a true delicacy and is worth 5 brooms. Silvia
asked for spaghetti a la  boscaiola  which my mother-in-law had
recommended which has mushrooms, basil, asparagus and some slices of
lomito.. (FETTUCCINE BOSCAIOLA:  Flat pasta in seafood sauce with
mushrooms and basil, accompanied by lomito rounds and fresh
asparagus)   also very good although we had to bring it home, since
Silvia couldn't eat any more although I ate all my gnocchis. Now you
know why I have to go to the dietician. And, to end, the desserts,
Alfredo arrived and told us we had to try the desserts and brought
us four; the cheese flan which Silvia loved, the lemon pie,
delicious and very light, the  Tiramisu  made here in Tre fratelli,
very good, with a good flavor and, to end, with chocolates and
little dishes, the chocolate  terrine with raspberry sauce. We had a
great time and ate very well. We left at 1 AM  TRE FRATELLI Centro
Comercial Paco Telephone 289-4389

BACCHUS MEDITERRANEAN & PIZZA Finally i when, and twice, first on a
Sunday with all my family and  a Friday evening  with the wife ,
both nights we sat on the terrace, that is one of best areas to be
in this restaurant, they have also   3 other area, 2 in the main
entrance a another before the terrace, this one and the terrace are
the best areas  with better ambiance .  For my Sunday visit i made a
reservation with a week in advance, for Friday and did it the same
late afternoon i think i was lucky . I do recommend making a
reservation  before you go be flexible  time wise sometimes  at
Sunday their  is no space for 12 or 1 pm but you may have a late
lunch like 330 pm .
The ambiance is relax, casual, great service, on Sunday with the
family we had Martin as our waiter, not only ge was  professional
but he was attentive to my 4 kids even on is still in the belly, In
many restaurants you go waiters are more interested in the adults,
and not in the kids  and in reality if the kids are well attended
parent have a better time and we enjoy are meal.  Also the food  in
this restaurant is cooked at the moment in our case Silvia does not
like garlic so in Bacchus you can request  the dish with out it even
the sauce. Another  point  is that the owner are always  their so
the service and the quality is always great, that business 101
About  the food here it goes we started with a  Focaccia follow  by
Carpaccio a la Italiana   one of the best a ever had;  Esteban had a
Mediterranean  Ceviche not bad. As a main dish we had a  Fettuccine
Boscaiola, Gnocchi Mediterráneo  with  fresh tomato sauce,  the
kids  had a  jam and  mozzarella , excellent and i had not in the
menu a  penne in  checca sauce mmmmmmmmmmmmmm..  Dessert we all
shared a  Semifreddo of  Turrón Bacchus with hot   chocolate sauce
fundido, mmmjjjj
For my next visit i will try  the meat selection the Mix Italian
Antipasto,  Carpaccio Salmon from Norway, the s Cannelloni's of
ricotta and spinach and for dessert the fried  Ravioli  filled of
compota of green apple  and toffe sauce with  vanilla ice cream .
So are you hungry ? Bacchus    is 300 mts east  from  Panadería
Musmanni,  in Santa Ana   phone 282-5441

CHE QUIERO MAS BIFE NOVILLO ALEGRE EN  SANTA ANA
The restaurant with more votes by the EZN readers(by GETTING TO KNOW
OUR READERS in chapter  16 and  chapter 2 in favorite restaurants),
Novillo Alegre, opened in Santa Ana.  Escazu keeps operating
normally, by the way   we went on November and it was Sofia first
visit  to a restaurant, we  enjoyed the food, which is always
great. But  today   I want to tell you  that  the Novillo Alegre
opened in Santa Ana.  A great place, great atmosphere, terrace,
also  with a playground and good size garden , in other words, a
place we can enjoy with our kids.Novillo Alegre  is still a place to
enjoy an excellent Bife de chorizo (loin), Argentinean turnovers,
Oregano or Napolitana Provoleta, etc.     A first class wine
list.Desserts are wonderful, I recommend the apple pancake and
nutella pancake, they are mmmmmmmmm, they also have an excellent
Turamisu. The Novillo Alegre in Santa Ana  is located 150 mts North
of Automercado, at la subasta.   Telephones : 203-4753.  Make
reservations on Sunday and holidays.  Escazu 288-4995,  125 mts East
of Super Saretto on the main road.
REMINDER shows you the first article about the Novillo published in
the Ezn of November 2001 for you to see that quality has been
maintained. NEW  ARGENTINEAN RESTAURANT Last Thursday I visited a
new restaurant on the old road between San José and Escazu, 125
meters east of Saretto.  There is a large Argentinean flag outside
with the sign PARRILLADA ARGENTINA EL NOVILLO ALEGRE.  I had driven
past it quite a few times and thought it was just a soda.  But
someone recommended it and I went.  Silvia asked me what to wear and
I told her it was just casual.  When we arrived, I thought of the
song "La pinta es lo de menos" (What is on the outside, doesn't
matter).  Inside, I found a warm atmosphere, elegant, but casual and
very friendly.  The owner (Che!!) was very attentive, really
incredible.  The menu is quite varied and not expensive.  For
appetizers, we ordered an empanada argentina and homemade sausage.
(I always recommend Saretto's sausage, but this was spectacular).
We ordered more sausage and tried the morcilla sausage also.  It was
very good.  (The last time I ate morcilla was in Spain.)  We also
had a bottle of red wine. The wine prices were reasonable -   We
ordered BIFE DE CHORIZO as a main course. That is what it is called
in Argentina, but it is called BIFE DE LOMO on the menu.  It comes
accompanied by french fries and a salad.  Well, this BIFE DE CHORIZO
DE LOMO WAS THE TENDEREST,  MOST DELICIOUS MEAT!!  Silvia isn't a
big meat eater, but wanted to order more!   Ahhh, finally the
desserts!  They have a homemade flan with cream and dulce de leche.
It's good.  Also, the Peras al  Borgoña (pears in red wine) are
delicious, soft and very good.  EL NOVILLO ALEGRE  is open every day
for lunch and dinner. On Sundays, it's open until 5pm.    ESCAZU
ESCARGOT  (ME, DANIEL!) recommends this restaurant.  If they
maintain this quality, they will become one of the best steak
restaurants in ESCAZU. The food critic of LA NACION newspaper
ESCARGOT GAVE THIS RESTAURANT 4 OF 5 FORKS.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

LA CASCADA=THREE GENERATIONS AND STILL EATING GOOD
I will tell you a story from my youth. More than 31 years ago, a
6th grade student who used to wear glasses and lived in Los Yoses
with his parents moved to Escazú. Everyday after school he would
go to La Cascada Restaurant to have lunch, since his parents were
remodeling their new house and La Cascada was just around the corner
from the house. This boy I am talking about is me. Since then, I
have kept going and grew up with the quality standard La Cascada
offers. It has been many years since I was 12, I am now forty xxx
years old and La Cascada maintains its quality and excellent meat,
not to mention its great service; many waiters are still the same,
it is almost like the TV show Cheers, everybody knows your name,
they always know who I am. One day my mother in law said that in
La Cascada they served a glorified "casado" (casado is the typical
plate of the Costa Rican worker: rice, beans, plantain and meat).
Each plate is accompanied by a big potato, a portion of black beans
that is delicious, sweet ripe plantain mmmmm, and a portion of
meat. My favorite plate is the "Rollizo" which is the heart of
the tenderloin, for those who love meat it is a real treat. My
favorite appetizer is the avocado with shrimps, not to mention the
palm hearts they serve which is really fresh and with a great
taste. Everybody who lives or has lived in Escazú knows La Cascada,
and I think it is time to go back. La Cascada is not only meat,
they also serve fish, lobster and many other choices. La Cascada is
located in Escazú, behind Shell next to Saretto Super Market.
Opens every day. Telephone 228-0906. Three generations? My
parents, Silvia and I, my kids

PERUVIAN OR CHINESE OR BOTH = CHANCAY It is incredible that an ex-
beauty queen, mother, tennis player, entrepreneur and T.V. news
reporter opens a restaurant with her husband, brother and parents.
I ask myself, how does she find the time for so many things? What
I can tell you about this new place is that it has typical Peruvian
food and Chinese food (chifa) which is excellent. The Inauguration
was splendid, delicious appetizers and a cozy environment. But
from the inauguration I could not know how the restaurant was really
going to be, so I went back. I went on October 4 and it was full
of Peruvians and Ticos, something positive. There was Patricia and
Macho, the owners, excellent hosts, although Macho was always
keeping an eye on everything. Here is what I ate at CHANCAY "RONDA
DE MARISCOS CALIENTE" which includes squid, shrimps, octopus,
parmesan shells, all breaded to eat with special sauces. A
delicious plate for several people. "TIRADITO CHANCAY " Fish,
shells and shrimps in 3 different sauces, sushi type, a real
treat. "CAUSA DE POLLO" Potato with chicken and avocado. A cold
appetizer, really good. I recommend to share it since it is a
little " golosa ". "ARROZ CHAUFA DE POLLO" Special Chinese rice
(chifa), really good to accompany other plates "CERDO AGRIDULCE"
Pork in tamarindo sauce with pineapple with special Chinese
vegetables, delicious. "POLLO EN SALSA DE OSTION" A
specialty.... It is really an exclusive plate of the Chinese
food. Perfect to share. And to finish, "SUSPIRO A LA
LIMEÑA" Peruvian dessert, only one in the country and gives you
the sensation of a HAPPY ENDING, this is not for
sharing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Very good prices and service.
CHANCAY represents the Peruvian Gastronomy in its glory. Located at
the Centro Comercial Plaza Itskatzu, telephone 289-6964. I recommend
to make reservations.

ITALY IN SANTA ANA
Finally, I have discovered a good, nice and cheap place in Posos de
San Ana, thanks to the recommendation made by Willy Calvo from the
company Infirma, of which we will read soon about in EZN. This is
not a fancy place, but it is pleasant, clean and simple, actually as
you go by it looks like a typical little soda but when you go in it
has quite a nice atmosphere, especially at night, the Italian owner
attends the tables himself, the menu is varied and not expensive,
they tell me that everyone from the Forum and nearby businesses come
for lunch, that it is always full and with good reason. We went for
lunch and ordered a Focacia, 2 fettuccine Alfredo's done with ham,
mushrooms, sweet cream all baked in a Pyrex covered with cheese au
gratin, mmmmmm, Take notice that when it arrives at your table it is
VERY hot and takes a while to cool off, we also ordered an ice tea
and a couple of cokes and the bill was 5,000 colons, not bad at
all. They do not sell liquor as they do not have a liquor license
but you may take your own bottle of wine or beers and accompany your
meal at no extra cost. You will thank me… Pizza Gino 2823859,
here's how to get there… tico style...take the highway and get off
at the Santa Ana exit, go towards San Antonio de Belén, at the
corner of the turn off to Parque Valle del Sol turn right on the
hardware store side and keep going to the end of the road, turn
left, go 75 meters, right there on the corner.
p.s. I returned with Esteban for pizza, it was excellent and
delicious, we ordered a pizza with half anchovies, black olives, and
capers and the other half was jam and cheese, a large plus three
cokes march 2004 i had this article in the escazu news

Daniel,
Your reviews are very insightful. Would it be possible to include some costs for the menu selections? That will certainly help us budget for living in CR!!!

I can give you some general guidelines.  Although many things in Costa Rica are more expensive than in the US or Europe, eating out is still a good value.  My experience and in making comparisons with visitors is that the prices for entrees are similar, particularly if you are comparing specials in the U.S.  However in the U.S. desserts and drinks are extremely expensive, while here your total bill will probably be much less than what you find back home.

Cheap local restaurants ( called "sodas" ) can be very good and will charge under $3 for a complete lunch (meat or poultry or fish, salad, rice, beans, plantain, and juice).

They can have other menu items that might cost $2.50 to $5 and then you pay extra for your drinks and side dishes.  These prices are also good for the many chinese restaurants you see around and other restaurants that specialize in the local market.

Next up the ladder are the mid-level restaurants, many are mid level as far as price range and excellent as far as quality.  Here you probably won't find a main dish under $5 and almost all will be less than $10.  The majority will be $7 or $8.  Appetizers and side dishes will run from  $2.50 to $3.50.

There are also expensive restaurants that are sometimes overpriced and sometimes well worth the money.  As is true anywhere.

Beer, soft drinks and desserts will cost between $2 and $3, obviously more expensive at pricier places.  Liquors slightly more for house drinks and a lot more for call or premium drinks.

As to the restaurants Daniel mentions, I took the liberty of looking them up in the Tico Times Restaurant Guide ( www.ticotimes.net ) for pricing and rating:

$ - 5;  $$ - 5-10;  $$$ - 10-20; $$$$ - 20-30; $$$$$ - over 30  (per person incl 10 % tip & 13% tax, no drinks)

BARILOCHE   where all we have something to choose
We do not have to go to l Argentina to eat, here at the  Paco Mall  in Escazu just open a new place to fill our stomachs located where  San Telmo restaurant was.  Bariloche is of the same chain of the owners  of the Novillo Alegre  which tells us  the rate of its quality. But Bariloche is not an Argentine typical restaurant is more of a  cosmopolitan and  international place since its menu has  dishes from Swiss, Mediterranean, German, Italian, Argentine, Frances etc etc with a Argentine twist.  Has a pleasant atmosphere, where we you will find in a single place  a thematic
variety in its menu.
In our first  visit we had  several entrees , we chose  Calamary or Squid  in marinara sauce, mmmmmm; also we requested a Beef Carpaccio  with rugula and parmesan
cheese, very flavorful but very strong flavor;  a cheese camembert fried with grape sauce, which was flavorful and fresh variant. and to finalize the entrees a Escargot
snails in garlic butter and spices mmmmjjjjjj.  We also requested the Fondue first the one of rich rich rich cheese  and we follow with   meat bourguignonne fondue with a
variety of sauces of very good flavor. So after this great variarity of entrees and  fondue we had our desserts. Silvia had her favorite the apple pancake with cointreau, Esteban had a  delicatessen  a  mousse of baileys which is  smooth and rich, follow by  pancake with raisin and rum, not bad.
In our second visit we  had to have our camembert cheese  with grape sauce and the calamary hoops, our favorites. We ventured ourselves to the strong plates or main
dishes ....Silvia had   Tagliatelle with  salmon and asparagus in olive oil  a paste  delight; Esteban requested Ribs of lamb, plenty and good. I tried the  stuffed
Chicken with bacon, mozzarella cheese  and sweet Chile for me its an  original and rich and delicious  recipe.  Desserts again the apple pancake, mousse of baileys, also  i  requested the pancake of nutella with peach mmmm mmmmmm,  light and rich and  we also shared a  Copon Tronador that is a special of the house, rich, smooth,  sweet
The service is first class, is fabulous, the waiters are great  with the children,  and for me  is of extreme importance. Bariloche Centro Comercial  Paco ph .288-5181.
