If anyone is even remotely interested in sharing a 40' container PLEASE contact
me and
let's try to work something out...it is SOOO much more cost effective to ship
the big one,
as I'm sure many of you know. Perhaps my hubby and I can load up our stuff in a
U-haul
or similar and bring it to the container at your home....let's brainstorm,
please.
BTW I'm in West Virginia, so somewhere in the eastern US would be preferred. We
plan to
move later in the year, and can probably be a little flexible as to when we'd
need our stuff
shipped. Thanks!
Jamie
P.S. I realize in most situations it is unwise to ship
stuff to CR,
however, we are
going to be
shipping mostly specialty tools, specialty appliances (for off grid use), specialty farm
equipment
(milking machine, etc) so for us it's worth it to ship quality we can trust.
Just thought I'd
add a little disclaimer Smiley

Hi Jaime,

Good luck with finding someone to share the container.  I have a friend who wants to ship some things, but from Arizona - which would probably translate to Houston or New Orleans.  In any case, you need a good customs broker who will help you find ways to lower the duties on what you are bringing in.  They should also be able to explore possible ways to consolidate the shipment into a 40 foot container.

Hi Russ,

HOw do we find a good custom broker.  We are planning on bringing items with us on the airplane and through air cargo.  How do we find out what is taxed and what is not?  I look forward to your reply.  Belinda

The Go Dutch site has a good article about customs here, Costa Rica Customs and Relocation

They recommend Edwin Obando at West International Movers (Winmovers) at (506) 215-1585 or email him.

Another local company that has a lot of experience is ABC Movers

Your American-European broker can also recommend other customs brokers.  The broker will be able to tell you what you will pay taxes on and how much you can expect to pay.  Also ways to pack things in order to minimize the duties.
