When is the rainy season in Costa Rica?

Is it safe to live there?

Where is the best part of Costa Rica on the beach to live?

I leaning toward a gated community.

Hi Ginnie, welcome to the forum.

The general rainy season in Costa Rica is considered to be from May through November.   This can vary from year to year, according to the effects of El Niño (drier years) and La Niña (wetter).  In addition, there is a traditional dry spell in July (veranillo de San Juan). Also, different areas of the country experience different weather patterns, for example the Caribbean is dry in October.

A gated community is a good choice for many expats, particularly when you are considering traveling quite a bit or the home is a second home.  In general Costa Rica is very safe.  The normal precautions that you would take when traveling to any major tourism destination (Disney world, The Vatican, Eiffel Tower, etc.), are sufficient to keep you out of trouble here.

The best beach to live?  That is a tough one, as there are literally hundreds of beaches here. Imagine that last year 56 beaches earned the prestigious Blue Flag Award, that is only given to organized communities that meet strict standards as to cleanliness, water purity, and infrastructure.  The best beach for anyone to live on will depend on your budget, what amenities you need, what activities you like and what type of expat community suits you.
