Did I hear that the Costa Rica tennis club was for sale, anyone have any information? That opens the door for commentary on different country clubs around the country, what's yours and where is it at? Here are the ones I can think of off the top of my head:
Escazu Country Club I think the membership here is still about $20,000 plus a monthly fee of .... ?? You have to be recommended by other members and they can still refuse you. They have a nine-hole golf course, tennis stadium and I'm not sure of other facilities. Maybe Daniel knows??
La Guaria Country Club I checked this out for our family a few years ago. The membership here was $2000. The monthly fee was about $30. They have squash courts, tennis courts(lots), Olympic size swimming pool, outdoor basketball, playground for kids, a restaurant / bar, small conference/meeting room, dance/aerobics studio and weight room. The membership is pretty open, but you do have to be recommended by 2 members in good standing.
Costa Rica Tennis Club Sauna, spa, bars, and restaurants. The Sports Center offers a basketball court, 9 outdoor tennis courts, 3 indoor tennis courts plus training walls, 3 swimming pools (2 training pools, 1 kids pool), spa, sauna, volleyball court, indoor soccer, outdoor soccer, squash, bowling alley, billiard room, ping pong and table games, a very big and complete gym with an aerobic room.
Indoor Club The Indoor Club is THE place on the east side of town. You can tell because in front of and beside this club are located the Volvo, Audi, Porsche, BMW and Land Rover dealers. The poorer members buy their cars at the Mitsubishi or Nissan dealer.
Members enjoy a bowling alley, athletic fields, soccer, basketball and volleyball courts, children’s playground, a gym, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, restaurants and more. No info on costs
Cariari Country Club The two main features of the Cariari Club are the championship level golf course designed by George Fazio in the 1970s and the Olympic class swimming pool. They also have lovely meeting facilities and tennis courts. This is where famous Costa Rican swimmers Claudia and Sylvia Poll trained.
El Castillo Membership costs $3000, Ice rink, tennis courts, gym, remote control car club... (web site in flash, I don't do flash.... slow connection.
ASECSS This is my country club, if you live in Coronado or La Garita you are welcome to join, but mainly I want to disseminate the idea, which I believe many private clubs are going to in order to meet costs. This club is owned by the Employees Association of the Caja Seguro Social, the public health care system. Last year they opened it up for public memberships. The deal was that you pay $500 for 5 memberships (family) or $1000 for 10 (corporate). No monthly fee! The CAJA employees pay like $2 a month for maintenance and it is optional, so they have to cover expenses somehow.
Anyway they have an indoor, heated swimming pool, a beach entry kid's pool, and large conference facility. A decent sized-soccer field with jogging track, indoor basketball/volleyball/soccer court, gymnasium, nice playground and a sports bar. They also have several mountain cabins open to the public for rental and numerous BBQ rancho style picnic areas.
So the point is that it has a lot of what the major clubs offer, but the price is spectacular. If you don't have a major club in your area, or want to save money, you might inquire around the association clubs to see if they are open to the public.
